Just today I was noticing that our apple trees were going to give a heavy crop this year, and now this. I may just have to try to build one of those presses in the next couple of months so I can try it on the crop. Great post!

To me, it is an interesting thread indeed. It has made me think, and I'm starting to pick out stuff from my scrap lumber pile to begin construction. If I can get this going, I think I will try some combos when I do the press. For example, we have a prolific pomogranite tree, and maybe i'll mix some in with the apples to see what sort of flavor I get. Could you get a second press after the first by soaking the mash in water and then running it through again? This should be a fun experiment.
