I would like to get a good dutch oven. But i would like to use it with charcoal or for use in my ceramic cooker. So the legs, no legs question.
Does some one make a set of legs that are not attached to the DO? So you could use a regular DO with charcoal under it? I know this could be a stupid question, but i am new to DO cooking and trying to figure out how this works. |

No such thing as a stupid question here. Personally, I'd go with legs but I do have a legless dutch oven - it was made that way too, the legs weren't cut off. You can use a trivet, or a lid stand or even a small piece of soapstone to raise the legless DO up. There are a lot of creative ideas out there!
Here's my soapstone block in the middle...
Hope this helps! _________________ If more people valued food and cheer and song above money, it would be a better world! |

Is your ceramic cooker a Big Green Egg?? Big Green Egg Company makes a special insert for dutch oven use. Contact your BGE dealer or their website to see this product. A "stove top" dutch oven has no legs and a domed lid--which is great for most uses---but not for baking. A"Camp Style" dutch oven has 3 legs and a recessed lid that allows coal placement on the top for baking and browning.
There are some folks that say that a ceramic cooker has such even heat--that you can bake in a stove top dutch oven--but that doesn't seem right to me. Ask your local dealer for advice. _________________ You Needs No Teef To Eat My Beef |

I use my camp ovens in the kitchen oven all the time. Just lower the rack and put the DO on a cookie sheet or cake pan... I imagine that'd be a little cheaper than a Big Green Egg accessory....lol! _________________ If more people valued food and cheer and song above money, it would be a better world! |

Paul, thanks for the ideas. I thought you should be able to do that somehow.
Wagoncook, not a BGE i have a Primo similar product but bigger and oval. I bake in it all the time. It does way better than the home oven. I gotta go look at the insert just to see what its for. I have never head of it.
Do they make a DO with no legs but a top for charcoal? |

If all you want is a cheap Dutch oven, if there is a Harbor Freight near you, they sell a 12" that I've seen used to good effect at gatherings. I think it runs $25.00, no shipping. _________________ God Bless,

| Coleman makes a DO with no legs but the lid still has a rim for the coals. I got it at WalMart, don't remember how much it was. |

Our local WalMart has 12" Colemans for $39.96. They had 2 12" Pre-seasoned Lodge ovens priced the same, so I grabbed another 12" at that price. |

I have a variation to something Paul said early on-the only dumb question is one you have and don't ask!
